Ducks and Geese are so smart. Just a few days ago I saw a mother duck with her ducklings and she was getting attacked by a male duck, I presume he was trying to forcibly court her as it was nearing the end of their mating season, but she already had ducklings obviously and wasn't interested. I threw a small piece of wood in the male duck's direction and pointed at him and after a while of staring at each other and pointing at him he gave me a defeated look for a while then swam away, and the mother duck and her ducklings came to the shoreline to wait near me until the coast was clear. It was really cute how quickly she understood I was helping them, also funny how quickly the male duck realized what was going on. They are definitely more intelligent then people give them credit for. I would never actually try to hit a duck with a piece of wood, btw. I was just trying to get its attention; and normally I don't intervene and wouldn't have if the ducklings weren't involved. If there was nothing more I could have done I would have left it at that, I know nature can be ugly.

Wow, a time when people didn't destroy a family by interfering but helped keep them together safely.
